What is Nitrox?

If you’re new to diving, you might wonder: What is Nitrox? Nitrox is a breathing gas with more oxygen and less nitrogen. The magic of Nitrox lies in its reduced nitrogen content compared to regular compressed air. Too much nitrogen can cause decompression sickness (DCS), which is risky. Nitrox lowers this risk by reducing nitrogen and increasing oxygen, allowing for longer dives. More oxygen means less nitrogen, and that means you can stay underwater longer.  However, it’s important to understand that Nitrox diving has its own unique risks and factors to consider, different from traditional air diving. Safely navigating these differences requires a thorough grasp of Nitrox and its application.

Topics covered in the SDI Nitrox Diver Certification include:

  • History of Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN): Dive into the past to understand EAN’s origins and development.
  • Physiology: Delve into the science of oxygen and nitrogen in the body during diving.
  • Equipment Considerations: Explore gear suitable for various oxygen concentrations.
  • Dive Computers: Learn about devices that monitor dive parameters, including oxygen levels.
  • Advantages and Disadvantages: Discover the pros and cons of using Nitrox for diving.
  • Equivalent Air Depth (EAD): Grasp the concept’s importance in Nitrox diving.
  • Procedures: Master the protocols for gas analysis and logkeeping.
  • Oxygen Analyzer Use: Understand how to operate and interpret readings from an oxygen analyzer.
  • Gas Analysis: Learn techniques for analyzing gas mixtures accurately.
