The best scuba diving in Costa Rica is done on the Pacific coast. Here, in the Gulf de Papagayo, there are three main diving locations. The local diving in the Gulf, The Bat Islands and the Catalina Islands.
The Bat Islands are best known for the bull shark dive at Big Scare. At this location, bull sharks are commonly present, and are here completely naturally. There is no baiting or chumming required. They also exist within a protected marine park, so you will also find massive schools of fish. Also here you have a good chance of seeing the beautiful Giant Pacific Manta Ray and also many other less common visitors such as whales and whale sharks.
The Catalina Islands is best known for their Manta Rays. Here at the Catalinas there are three dive sites where they frequent quite often. The Wall, The Point, and The Cleaning Station.
Diving conditions in Costa Rica are quite variant. The water ranges from around 70-75 during the winter months (Dec-May) to 85-90 during the summer (June-Nov). Visibility also ranges widely and can vary a lot from day to day. The range typically goes from about 15-20 feet on a poor day to 60-80 feet on a very good day.
Pricing ranges in Costa Rica based upon the season. The high season runs from November 15 until April 15th and you will find the accommodation rates go up by about 20%. The weather during this time is incredible. You aren’t likely to see a drop of rain from mid-December until early May. The diving is great year round in Costa Rica, but many people who have a lot of experience in Costa Rica prefer the low season. Warmer water, more encounters with Bull Sharks, generally a better chance of good visibility. The low season is also known as the green season in Costa Rica. You will tend to have an hour or so of rain each day during the summer months in the late afternoon.
