SDI Wreck Diver Course at Saguaro Scuba
Plunge into the Secrets of the Deep
Dive into the captivating world of underwater exploration with our SDI Wreck Diver Certification at Saguaro Scuba. Uncover the skills to navigate, explore, and appreciate sunken treasures while ensuring safety and expertise in the fascinating realm of wreck diving.
Who Is This Course For?
- Underwater Enthusiasts Seeking Adventure: Tailored for certified divers eager to delve into the captivating realm of wreck diving, expanding their underwater exploration skills.
- Explorers Pursuing Advanced Expertise: Ideal for those craving advanced dive training, this course is perfect for divers aspiring to uncover the mysteries of sunken history at intriguing wreck sites in deeper waters.
Certification Components:
eLearning: The first component of certification is an online class. Students should expect to spend 6-8 hours and must pass a final exam before any in-person learning.
Open Water Dives: Students must complete 2 open water dives and demonstrate mastery of required skills.
Because of geological considerations, this class is exclusively available on specific Saguaro Scuba dive trips.
To sign up for a class, simply complete the purchase online. One of the Saguaro Scuba staff will reach out to help you register for eLearning, confirm in-person class dates, and review necessary equipment.
Note: The training provided in this package fulfills the essential requirements for certification. If extra training is desired, sessions can be arranged at $110 each.
Wreck diving can be one of the most exciting aspects of sport diving, however, every effort must be made to maximize safe diving techniques. The SDI Wreck Diver Course will discuss the equipment and techniques commonly employed while wreck diving. This course may be taught as a non-penetration, 2 dives required, or as a limited-penetration course, requiring 3 dives. Limited penetration is defined as a swim through or within the ambient light of the entry point.
What you can expect to learn:
- Key Components:
- Wreck Exploration: Participants learn about different types of wrecks, their historical significance, and the challenges and opportunities they present for divers.
- Navigation Techniques: The course covers specialized navigation skills for wreck diving, including mapping the wreck, using guidelines, and understanding the layout of the site.
- Safety Protocols: Emphasis is placed on safety considerations specific to wreck diving, such as managing potential entanglements, respecting the marine environment, and handling potential hazards associated with wreck exploration.
- Penetration Techniques: For those qualified and interested, the course may cover basic wreck penetration techniques, with an emphasis on safety and proper training.
- Benefits: Graduates of the Wreck Diver Specialty Course gain increased confidence and proficiency in wreck diving, enabling them to explore and appreciate underwater wreck sites responsibly.
Course prerequisites:
- SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, or equivalent
- Minimum age 18, 15 for limited penetration course with parental consent
- Minimum age 10 with parental consent for a non-penetration course
- Junior Open Water Divers may not participate in any penetration activities or dives deeper than 18 metres/60 feet
- Divers must have a Deep Diver specialty certification or be able to provide proof of experience in order to dive deeper than 18 metres/60 feet in this course
Interested in diving deeper? The SDI Wreck Diver certification counts towards a single specialty rating to achieve the SDI Advanced Diver Development program.

The pool segment of your Open Water training is scheduled as a one day event. Students and Instructors will meet at Saguaro Diving, generally at 8am, and start the day with SCUBA gear assignment and set-up. The student is responsible for having their personal gear; mask, fins, dive boots and snorkel; prior to this day of training. From the shop we will head out to a designated Mesa Parks & Rec pool for a day of training and fun. Before donning SCUBA gear there is a swim evaluation; 200 yards, any stroke, and a 10 minute float/tread; as required by the certifying agency, PADI/SDI. It is during your water time that the required skills are accomplished to make you a safe diver. Later, during your Open Water certification dives, you will be evaluated on some of the skills that you learned in the pool. Because PADI/SDI training is standardized the student will accomplish the same skills/be evaluated on specific skills no matter where the training is conducted. Although you will not need your educational materials for this session, please pack a picnic style lunch, beverages, a bathing suit & towel, and sunscreen, along with your personal gear. Let’s get wet and make some bubbles!
